Teknek is an advocate of work placements. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge and inspiring future generations of STEM students. Teknek supports the local education program, offering a variety of workplace experiences to Schools and Universities. Earlier this month, we were pleased to welcome our first student placement since the emergence of the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Hector Wedderburn, from St. Columba’s School, Kilmacolm joined the Teknek team for the week commencing Monday, August 3rd. Hector is working hard to gain a place at University to study Engineering and asked to join the design department for the week. Hector embraced the ‘new norm’, following our Covid-19 secure working practices, that enabled him to complete the week-long work placement.
During his placement, Hector participated in the Teknek Academy, hosted by Sheila Hamilton, Technical Director. The Teknek Academy is an internal training program, designed to teach Teknek colleagues and customers about our products and technology.
We asked Hector about his experience working at Teknek: -
1/ Why did you apply for a work placement at Teknek?
"I wanted to find out more about the applications of Engineering. I had heard about Teknek and I was interested to find out more about the company and what it does."
2/ As this was your first time in a workplace, how did you feel as you walked in the door?
"I was nervous as I did not know what to expect. However, once I met the people I was working with, they made me feel very welcome and part of the team, so I quickly settled into my week."
3/ Was your week what you expected?
"I had no idea what to expect, but the week was as I would have wished it, I learned a lot about working in a design department."
4/ What was the highlight of your time at Teknek?
"I enjoyed the Teknek Academy which gave me a great insight into the products. I also enjoyed being invited to be involved with the design team as they tested new design ideas and equipment."
5/ Was there anything you did not enjoy?
"Everything I learned was valuable. The lab work in the Teknek Academy took me out of my comfort zone, but it gave me an appreciation of the importance of testing applications."
6/ Did the work placement help you to decide about your future career path?
"Yes, it has helped to guide me towards the area of engineering I would like to work in. Meeting the Teknek design team and being involved in what they do day to day was really interesting and helpful."
